Total Energy Consumption

Energy consumption per capita is 0.28 toe, including around 497 kWh of electricity (2021).

The country's overall energy consumption increased quickly during 2010-2016 (5.5%/year on average, driven by rapid economic growth (6.3%/year on average in the same period). The annual increase has been smaller since then, at around 2.9% per year between 2016 and 2021.

Gas is the main energy source (59%), ahead of oil (18%), biomass (17%), and coal (4%) (2021).

Crude Oil Production

The country imports over 6 times its oil production (1.43 Mt oil imported compared to 0.25 Mt of oil produced in 2021).

The country has a limited refining capacity of 35.5 kb/d (2020) distributed in 2 refineries: Chittagong (33 kb/d, commissioned in 1968) and Mongla (2.5 kb/d, 2013). Production of oil products covers less than one quarter of the consumption. Oil product imports have almost tripled since 2010.

Renewable in % Electricity Production

In 2021, Bangladesh set the objective of reaching 4.1 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 in its new NDCs, including nearly 2.3 GW of solar capacity (conditional contribution). The country slightly increased its goal compared to the latest PSMP (PSMP 2016), in which the target was 3.9 GW in 2041. PSMP 2016 planned for 2.4 GW of renewable capacity in 2021, including 1.27 GW of solar and 1.15 GW of wind. Only 168 MW of solar has been added since 2016 and no wind capacity.

CO2 Fuel Combustion/CO2 Emissions

In its updated NDC (2021), Bangladesh set an unconditional GHG emission reduction target of 6.7% by 2030, leading to emissions of 382 MtCO2eq in 2030, i.e. -28 MtCO2eq compared with the BAU scenario. The conditional reduction target is an additional 15% (i.e. 21.85%, i.e. -89 MtCO2eq), which would limit GHG emissions to 320 MtCO2eq. In the previous version, the reduction targets were, respectively, 5% and 10%.

CO2 emissions from energy combustion rebounded by 4% in 2021 to 89 MtCO2, after a 7.6% drop in 2020. They increased very rapidly between 2000 and 2019 (6.6%/year).
