Total Energy Consumption

Overall per capita energy consumption is around 0.45 toe. Per capita electricity consumption is approximately 408 kWh (2022).

Total energy consumption has increased by 8.5%/year since 2020 to around 16 Mtoe in 2022, after remaining stable between 2016 and 2020 at around 13.5 Mtoe. Previously, it had increased by 9.5%/year between 2006 and 2014, driven by the demand from households and services.

Crude Oil Production

Oil production rose by 1% in 2022 to 55.4 Mt, after a 38% decrease between 2015 and 2021. It increased very rapidly as from 2000, reaching its peak level of 96 Mt in 2008 (multiplied by a factor of 2.6) and fluctuated around 80-90 Mt until 2015.

Offshore blocks are divided into three bands: shallow water blocks 0-13 (band A), deepwater blocks 14-30 (band B), and ultra-Deepwater blocks 31-40 (band C). Around 63% of total oil production comes from deep water projects, 19% from ultra-deep water, and 17% from shallow waters.

Renewable in % Electricity Production

The new National Development Plan (PND) 2023-2027 seems less ambitious than the previous one and does not specify overall targets. It just sets targets for the construction and renovation of certain solar and hydroelectric power plants.

The target of PND 2018-2022 to add 500 MW of renewables (of which 200 MW solar, 100 MW wind, 100 MW biomass, and 100 MW mini-hydro) by 2022 was not achieved. At end-2022, around 300 MW of solar and 51 MW of biomass were operational..

The "Angola 2025" strategy targets 800 MW by 2025.

CO2 Fuel Combustion/CO2 Emissions

In its updated NDC (2021), Angola set a target to reduce its GHG emissions by up to 15% in 2025 and 21% in 2030 as compared to a BAU scenario. Under a conditional mitigation scenario, the country could further reduce its emissions by 25% and 36% in 2025 and 2030, respectively. Identified mitigation actions focus mainly on the development of renewables for electricity generation and on reducing gas flaring. Angola ratified the Paris Agreement in 2020.
